Penn State Berks held a reunion Friday for students of the former Wyomissing Center of the Pennsylvania State University who graduated between 1960 and 1972.

About 60 were in attendance at the reunion on the Penn State Berks campus. Some came from around Berks County, while others traveled from as far as New Mexico and Florida.

The event, which featured remarks from David Delozier, director of development and alumni relations, and R. Keith Hillkirk, Penn State Berks chancellor, was dubbed the “Pioneer Reunion” in honor of the students and staff of the Wyomissing Center, who are known as pioneers because they were the first graduates of the campus.

“Because they went to Penn State Berks in a different location, we realized they had had a different experience,” Delozier said. “They’re a unique group.”

Reunion attendees got a chance to catch up with their former classmates over lunch after hearing Delozier and Hillkirk speak about the significance of the reunion and the school’s recent accomplishments, respectively.

Although Penn State Berks hosts reunions for more recent graduating classes, this was the first reunion put together for this particular group.

The Wyomissing Center was one of several transition stages that led the campus to where it is today. In 1958, the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute closed due to a downturn in the textile industry. The school then made a deal with Penn State that led to the creation of the Wyomissing Center. At that time, the campus was a two-story building on Hill Avenue, where a McDonald’s now stands. The campus was renamed Berks Center before moving to Penn State Berks’ current location in Spring Township.
