The Ohio University Board of Trustees discussed issues ranging from the president’s interim replacement to the controversial issue of whether to allow concealed carry weapons on OU campuses when they met last Thursday and Friday.

Student Senate held its first of two forums on Thursday to address how a concealed carry referendum will work. At the last Senate hearing, Senators voted to put the question of allowing concealed carry weapons on campus to Ohio University students. The result of the campus’ vote will be issued to the Board of Trustees as a recommendation on deciding to allow concealed carry on all OU campuses.

Historic barns can be found across rural Ohio, and Athens County is no exception. Throughout southeast Ohio, these functional structures serve as reminders of the early European-American settlers and the architectural and agricultural practices they brought with them.
“Every barn is like a book full of stories that can be interpreted the more one learns about it, from the people who built it and the materials used in construction to the uses and changes the barn went through in its time,” said Thomas O’Grady, board member and newsletter editor of the Friends of Ohio Barns, a group dedicated to raising awareness for barns in Ohio.
While going through my old photos from this semester, I stumbled upon these, which I took along the Hocking River. I had originally just been taking photos of the river for a class, but eventually got distracted by these cute little bees (and one moth).
For my final project for an online journalism class I took this fall, I decided to cover the Athens County Humane Society and the work they do to control the cat population in Athens, where there is a huge number of stray and feral cats. See the original video and story here.

Republicans won the overwhelming majority of Ohio’s State Senate seats Tuesday night, and the 30th District seat was no exception. Republican Frank Hoagland beat incumbent Democrat Lou Gentile by 8,859 votes, winning eight of the 10 counties represented in the 30th District.
